About the ProjectThis bookmobile project is the culmination of an extended inquiry project by undergraduate and graduate students at Wake Forest University as part of EDU 377/677: Literacy in the 21st Century. This course examines the impact of emerging literacy trends on 21st century students in a digital, global world and includes a specific focus on promoting service learning, engaging reluctant and struggling readers, and examining New Literacies.
This particular project came to fruition after students wrote individual service learning proposals near the midpoint in the semester. Their goal was to use information gathered from other class assignments (i.e., book reviews, research papers) to consider potential whole-class service learning activities during the second half of the semester. The proposals were all very different and included ideas focused on children's and young adult literature, multicultural literature, reading workshops, after-school programs, family literacy programs, and English language learners. As the instructor sought to combine these ideas, he came across this article about the Forsyth County bookmobile in the Winston-Salem Journal, and the idea for this inquiry project was born.
